What is Phage Directory?
Advancing phage research through shared knowledge.
Since we started Phage Directory ten years ago, our focus has always been around helping phage researchers find what (and who) they need. Our goal is to accelerate research by bringing it all together, into one place.

We bring together jobs, events and funding opportunities, and share opinions, conversations and interesting new papers across the phage field in our newsletter, Capsid and Tail.
For patients and families, our phage therapy guide explains where and how phage treatment may be accessed.
Phage Alerts is currently on hold. Our community calls have helped researchers search for phages for clinical compassionate-use cases and research projects. You can still browse past alerts.
Capsid & Tail
Capsid & Tail is our periodical about the people and ideas behind phage research. We’ve written hundreds of articles and interviews, and shared our favorite papers in one of our — and our readers’ — favorite formats: Phage Picks.
We started C&T in 2018, as activity in the phage field was exploding and we wanted a way to keep track of it all. That feels even more true today.
Capsid & Tail is produced by Jessica Sacher and Jan Zheng, with contributions from wonderful volunteers across the phage community.
Read the latest issue, browse the archive, or follow the full publication through RSS.
Podovirus
Podovirus is our podcast about what it will take to bring phage therapy into wider clinical use.
Jess and Joe Campbell talk with researchers, clinicians, biotech leaders and others across the field about the scientific, clinical, regulatory and practical bottlenecks — and what people are doing to solve them.
We’d love your help!
Phage Directory gets better when we get help!
As useful as AI is for finding stuff, we really prefer hearing about conferences, meetups, and jobs directly from our readers.
- Send us a tip — jobs, events, funding, resources, or a lab we should know about. Listings are free.
- Add or update your profile so people can find you.
- Suggest a story for Capsid & Tail — a result, experience, or perspective worth sharing.
Our story
Phage Directory was founded in 2017 by Jessica Sacher, a phage scientist, and Jan Zheng, a product designer and engineer. We had seen an urgent search on Twitter for phages to treat Mallory Smith, a 25-year-old with cystic fibrosis and a life-threatening antibiotic-resistant infection.
The search made a gap painfully clear: researchers around the world had collections of phages, but there was no good way to find the right lab when a phage was urgently needed.
We built Phage Directory to help close that gap — and Phage Alerts to make it easier to mobilize the community when someone was searching for a phage.
Read Mallory’s story in STAT.
Who Are We?
Built and run by Jess and Jan, with help from people across the phage community.
With thanks to our volunteers
Over the years, volunteers have shared papers, written stories, made introductions and helped us keep up with the phage community. Thank you for being part of Phage Directory.

Listings, corrections and removal
We use publicly available information to put together listings of labs, organizations, companies, research, events and other parts of the phage ecosystem. Sources include institutional websites, ORCID, LinkedIn, Twitter/X, Google Scholar and other search tools. Some information may be old or incorrect.
If something is wrong or out of date, send us a correction with the listing link and what should change.
If you represent a listed lab, organization or other entry and would prefer not to be included, you can request removal. We keep an exclusion record so future imports don’t add removed listings back.
How we use AI
This relaunch of Phage Directory and Capsid & Tail would not have been possible without AI.
We use AI to help gather, structure and summarize information from across the public web. We also use it in our editorial workflow, including reading, editing and improving posts.
Community listings such as jobs, events and some research links may be found, selected and summarized by AI. This can include the Capsid & Tail digest and Roundup series. Phage Picks are always papers picked by us, though we often use AI to help read and summarize them.
We give credit and link back to original research and sources.
We use a combination of Claude, OpenAI and open models such as Nemotron, alongside search and retrieval tools including Google, Exa, Tavily, Parallel and Firecrawl.
